During the Okinawa campaign (WWll, April 1945), my dad was aboard the Navy destroyer, the USS KIDD. Dad was wounded in a kamikaze attack. He was overlooked in the kaos when the wounded were removed from the ship- thus his name was not turned in for a Purple Heart.
I tried to get the metal awarded to him, but the red tape was just too much! I decided to award him the Purple Heart metal via a tattoo.
RIP DAD,,,,,,,,,,,
